DELL: BIOS update for Linux
Using LVFS (Linux Vendor Firmware Service)
Check for fwupd:
Ubuntu typically includes fwupd by default in modern versions. You can check if it's installed and running:
Terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fwupd
sudo systemctl status fwupd
If it's running, you're good to go. * Check for Updates. Open your Software Updater (or "Software & Updates" application) in Ubuntu. It should automatically check for system updates, including firmware updates.
Terminal:
fwupdmgr refresh
fwupdmgr get-updates
This will show you any available firmware updates. * Install the Update.
If an update is found via the Software Updater, simply proceed with the installation as you would with any other software update. If using fwupdmgr from the terminal:
Terminal:
sudo fwupdmgr update
The system will likely download the .cab file containing the firmware. Crucially, you'll be prompted to restart your computer. The actual BIOS update process occurs during the boot sequence, before Ubuntu fully loads. Ensure your laptop is plugged into AC power before restarting for the update. The system will show a Dell BIOS update screen with a progress bar. Do not interrupt this process. Once complete, the system will restart into Ubuntu.
